Alyssa Brayboy: The new ‘Sugar’ short film is heading to NYC
Want an inside look at the world of sex work? How about all in the form of a six-minute presentation? It’s all from the eyes and filming of director Alyssa Brayboy and the upcoming Sugar flick.
Slated to arrive in the Big Apple this December 2, it’s a super passionate project from AB.
Alyssa Brayboy proudly announces the official debut screening of Sugar, a thriller wrapped in a world where money and sex are keysto power. Sugar screens at the 2023 Dances with Films festival on December 2 at 12:30pm at the Regal Union Square in New York City.
The six-minute short, directed, written and starring Brayboy, serves as a proof of concept for her dramatic thriller series, of the same title – a glimpse into the raw truths of sex work and the outside gaze.
“This project is a deeply personal labor of love; it is a piece of my heart that I am equally excited and terrified to share. Sugar is a mixed bag – it’s not all bad, it’s not all good, but it's raw, it's real and it explores sex work with honesty and courage,” enthused Brayboy, who runs her own indie production company, Buttons. “While Sugar might be about a lesser seen aspect of our social fabric, my hope is that viewers gain an understanding of the essential role sex work plays in people’s lives… as well as the larger landscape of sexual dynamics.”
“I am proud to bring this story to the forefront, showcasing the tough choices people make in a world that's quick to judge. Dances with Films festival is the perfect place to introduce Sugar - where independent spirit and bold storytelling are not only accepted, they are celebrated."
